What is MathCraft?

A free maths app that turns the curriculum into an adventure your child will choose to play.

MathCraft is a free, AI-powered maths learning app for children aged 5–14 (UK Years 1–9). It disguises the White Rose Maths curriculum as a pixel-art RPG where children raise a companion creature, build an island, and complete quests — with every interaction powered by real curriculum maths. It was rated 7.3/10 by a panel of 10 UK teachers and is completely free with no subscriptions.

How MathCraft works

Children choose a companion — a dragon, a robot, or an alien — and enter an island world. Every quest, trade, and battle is powered by real maths from the White Rose Maths curriculum. They are not “doing fractions” — they are splitting provisions after a goblin raid. They are not “calculating area” — they are sizing up a new farm for their island.

The adaptive engine adjusts difficulty in real time. If a child struggles, questions get easier. If they fly through, questions get harder. The system uses spaced repetition to revisit topics at optimal intervals for long-term retention.

Key features

  • AI wizard tutor (Merlin): Uses Socratic questioning — never gives the answer. Every conversation is logged for parents.
  • Parent dashboard: PIN-protected. Shows accuracy, curriculum heatmap, AI tutor logs, and progress over time.
  • Hard time limits: Parents set 15–60 minute daily caps. The app locks when time expires.
  • Deep Mastery approach: Inverse problems, multi-step challenges, and structured thinking — techniques the Education Endowment Foundation identifies as effective.
  • Accessibility: Dyslexia-friendly font, text-to-speech, high contrast, reduced motion, three font sizes.
  • No ads, no data selling, no in-app purchases.

Curriculum coverage

MathCraft covers 85+ topics from the White Rose Maths curriculum across Year 1 to Year 9, including:

  • Number & place value
  • Addition, subtraction, multiplication, division
  • Fractions, decimals, percentages
  • Geometry (shapes, angles, area, perimeter, volume)
  • Measurement (length, mass, time, money)
  • Statistics (charts, mean, median, probability)
  • Ratio, proportion, algebra

Who built MathCraft?

MathCraft was created by Mike, a software developer and parent based in Barcelona. He built it because his own son disliked maths homework but loved video games. The app has been validated by independent panels: 10 UK teachers rated it 7.3/10 for curriculum accuracy, and 10 professional game designers rated it 7.35/10 for game quality.

How is MathCraft different from other maths apps?

Most educational maths apps are worksheets with a cartoon layer. MathCraft integrates the maths into genuine game mechanics — a resource economy, companion evolution, and island building — so the learning is invisible to the child. It also provides full AI tutor transparency (every conversation logged for parents), hard screen-time limits, and is completely free with no premium tiers.
